The college wanted to create a new office suite that would be used by a current Fellow, as well as pay tribute to Samuel Johnson. As a former student of Pembroke College in Oxford, the design was to act as a lasting tribute to the great writer and poet.
It was important that the scheme reflected the period of time which he spent at the college, and the personality of the man himself. It was crucial that we also provided an up to date working environment for the Fellow who would be using the office.
Our brief was to marry the past and the present.
” We really enjoyed working with you on the project, and are so pleased with the final result. The Fellow has moved in, and is very much enjoying his new office! “

The college had a Samuel Johnson expert on hand to guide us on their understanding of the man, and what the college would have been like at the time of his presence. We also used our knowledge of period styles to help guide our choice on colours and fabrics.
We created a period feel by designing bespoke cabinetry and also the desk. Introducing down lights enabled us to create spotlights on the various artefacts, giving the room strong focal points and creating a sense of drama.
Most of the modern office storage we were able to install into a small anti-room, so we could preserve the integrity of the main office. The bespoke cabinets also provided plenty of book storage, and the cupboards gave the Fellow somewhere to hide away ring binders etc.
