Scenic Island Hotel

A much loved hotel in need of a refresh

Lead Designer: Jill

The Brief

The hotel was recently acquired by the owners, and was in need of a refresh. The brief was to bring the hotel up to date without alienating the loyal customer base.

The main reception, bar and restaurant were to become open plan, so the furniture needed to be flexible and easy to move around according to the needs of the guests and functions at the hotel.

The conservatory area was not an inviting space, and was generally unused by guests – so our brief was to make it feel more cosy and inviting to while away an afternoon in.

The rooms were also in need of a refresh. New colour schemes and furnishings bring them in line with the communal areas.

The Design Concept

How did you cope with logistics of working off the mainland?

First, we needed to be really clear on the design concepts and finishes. Lots of design boards and samples had to be prepared to ensure the finished scheme would be an accurate representation of the designs.

Once the project started, we needed to be very organised! Everything had to be checked and double checked. All the furnishings were collated in a depot on the mainland, checked and then shipped onwards to the island. After fitting out 31 bedrooms, the restaurant and bar we only had two damaged items!

How did you decide on the scheme?

We wanted to give a nod to the islands and the beaches etc but without being seaside twee. We took inspiration for the colours from photos of the Isles of Scilly – lots of blue skies and seas, green fields and beautiful beaches – that gave us a colour palette of marine blue, moss green and neutrals.

We incorporated lots of textures to further the ‘outdoor in’ feel, with sumptuous velvets, linens, canework and some driftwood inspired furniture. We wanted a grown up feeing to being by the sea that would appeal to the hotel’s clientele.

It’s all in the detail

Client Testimonial

We are so delighted with the outcome. Guest feedback has been really great, and we are in the number one spot for reviews on TripAdvisor for the first time!
